Medical Student Electives

Many elective opportunities are available for medical students through the Department of Family Medicine at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.

Our electives are as follows:

Family Medicine

The family physician provides comprehensive and continuing medical care to patients of all ages and both sexes. This elective exposes the student to family medicine through office experience, didactic sessions, inpatient services, and an opportunity to do home visits and nursing home visits. Conferences cover many of the common problems seen in primary care. Readings and computer patient management problems are available.

 Sports Medicine

This Sports Medicine consultation elective introduces the student to concepts important to the health of athletes. Common injuries and their rehabilitation will be emphasized. The student will develop proficiency in the musculoskeletal history and physical examination. The approach to sports medicine will be emphasized.

Complementary Medicine

This experience includes a complete lecture and hand-on curriculum in integrative medicine, the harmonious blending of both mainstream and nontraditional therapies. Students will have an opportunity to work with nontraditional practitioners in the fields of acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, homeopathy and mind-body integration. Students will learn how to perform an integrative medicine evaluation and will receive a lecture series on herb/supplement pharmacology. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in integrative team meetings where actual patient cases are discussed.
