William W. Briner, Jr., M.D. , FACSM, CAQ

Sports Medicine Fellowship Director, Family Medicine Faculty

Dr. Briner is a charter member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. He has served as Team Physician for the U.S. National Soccer and Volleyball Teams, as well as volunteering as volleyball venue physician at the Atlanta and Athens Olympics.  He completed a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Marshall University and has published several articles on various sports medicine topics.  He also serves as Team Physician for the Oakton Community College and Maine South High School athletic teams.

Michael Fragen, MD, FACSM, CAQ

Sports Medicine. 

Dr. Fragen is a Board-certified internist with a practice devoted almost exclusively to sports medicine.  The fellow spends Friday mornings doing stress tests and exercise prescription with Dr. Fragen.  Mike is a graduate of Lutheran General’s Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship.

Robert M. Patek, M.D.

4 weeks of Orthopedics. 


Dr. Patek is a graduate of the Kerlan - Jobe Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship in Los  Angeles and is a former defensive back for the Michigan Wolverines.

James Bresch, M.D.  

4 weeks of Orthopedics. 


Also a Kerlan-Jobe Fellowship graduate.  He serves as team physician for the Chicago Wolves – (minor league professional hockey team.)

Holly Benjamin, M.D., FACSM


4 weeks, Pediatric Sports Medicine

Holly is a board member of the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine. She is Associate Professor of Pediatrics amd Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Chicago and Director of their Primary Care Sports Medicine program. She is also a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness.

Sydney Brandwein, M.D

4 weeks of Rheumatology 

Dr. Brandwein has a very busy rheumatology practice with a significant number of newly diagnosed cases of inflammatory srthritis each month. This experience is invaluable fro the fellow to help sort out rheumatologic issues that may present to a sports medicine practice.

David Raab, M.D.

4 weeks of Orthopedics 

Dr. Raab graduated from an Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship at the  Minneapolis Sports Medicine Center where he helped care for the Minnesota Vikings and Twins.

Joseph Barr, Ph.D.

4 weeks of
Sports Psychology  

Dr. Barr has a long-standing interest in the psychology of sport and has worked with several Olympic speedskaters.

Other faculty include staff physicians from Lutheran General Hospital, physical therapists, a nutritionist, certified athletic trainers, podiatrists, and exercise physiologists.
