Director's Welcome

Hi!

Welcome to the Web site of the Family Medicine Residency at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital (ALGH). We encourage you to explore our program, both on this site and in person, to get a more complete understanding of the opportunities our program provides.

One of the oldest and most highly regarded programs in the Chicago area, our residency is a fully accredited 8-8-8 program. Our current residents, as you can see by their profiles, bring diversity, strong clinical skills, and enthusiasm to our program. Our graduates, many of whom are on staff at ALGH, have gone on to various careers including solo practice, small group, large multispecialty group, urgent care, academic careers, and international mission work.

We have 13 board certified family physicians and a clinical psychologist committed to your professional and personal development. The diversity of the faculty (Adult Down Syndrome, Complementary Medicine, Geriatrics, International Medicine, OB Skill, Quality Initiatives, Sports Medicine, Women's Health) will help you develop your skills, your personal style and your career plans.

The Lutheran General Family Medicine program will ensure that you achieve the competencies needed to become the best family physician you can be.

Patient Care

You will enjoy progressive responsibility for a large and diverse population and will develop the necessary skills to provide appropriate Health Maintenance care and to manage a broad spectrum of disease.

Practice-based Learning

You will learn to assess the quality of scientific studies and analyze your practice for improvement opportunities. As one of the “most wired” hospitals in the nation, Advocate Lutheran General Hospital’s program encourages and supports the use of technology to help you develop life-long learning skills.

Interpersonal Communication Skills

You will have ample opportunity to create and maintain healing relationships with patients and their families and will become a full participant on our health care team.

Medical Knowledge

Through both formal conferences and independent learning opportunities, you will learn to assess and develop your knowledge base. The faculty attendings in every department are a wealthy resource for your learning.

Professionalism

We are here to assist you in developing your commitment to meeting your patients’ needs, practicing with integrity, and learning to balance your professional and personal needs.

System-based Practice

You will assist patients with all types of insurance (or lack thereof) and learn how to help them, how to provide quality cost-effective care, and how health care systems function.

Nesset Family Medicine, our educational home, is on the hospital campus. More than 27,000 patients are seen annually. You will provide care for your panel of patients in a supportive and actively educational environment that provides progressive responsibility and independence.

Fellowships in Sports Medicine and Geriatrics are available for interested graduates.

Once again, welcome to the Family Medicine Residency at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. A strong, innovative residency, we are continuously refining and changing to meet the needs of our residents and our patients.

I look forward to meeting you!

Sincerely,

Judith A. Gravdal, MD
